Cyber People
Cyber People: The Definitive Biography
Cyber People was a pioneering Italian studio project that defined the "Spacesynth" subgenre of Italo Disco during the mid-1980s. Emerging from the legendary Memory Records stable, the project is celebrated for its futuristic, vocoder-heavy instrumental soundscapes.
The Memory Records Era (1984–1988)
The project was conceptualized under the management of Alessandro Zanni and Stefano Cundari. While the lineup shifted behind the scenes, the output remained a benchmark for high-energy synthesizer dance music.
• The Early Phase: The project began as an instrumental studio venture by Giorgio Spagna. He was the primary creative force behind the first three seminal releases, which established the group’s signature robotic aesthetic.
• The Transition: After Spagna’s departure following the third release, the mantle was taken up by Stefano Cundari and Mirko Limoni, who produced the fourth and final single for the original label.
• Key Singles:
• "Polaris"
• "Void Vision"
• "Digital Signal Processor"
Branding and Distribution
While the project primarily released singles on 12" vinyl, their influence was amplified by ZYX Music, which handled German distribution.
• Naming Variations: On certain pressings, the name was occasionally spelled "Ciber People." * Digital Availability: Most A-side tracks were never released on standalone CDs during the 80s, appearing instead on various "Best of Italo Disco" compilations. "Polaris" stands as a rare exception, receiving a dedicated CD single release via ZYX.
The "Ciber People" Distinction
It is crucial to distinguish the original Italian project from later works. Following the peak of the Italo Disco era, ZYX Music commissioned producer Humphrey Robertson (known for Daylight and Futurespace) to revive the sound.
• The Robertson Era: These later productions were released under the name Ciber People to capitalize on the original brand's popularity.
• Style Difference: While Robertson recorded a full-length album in this style—featuring the European hit "The Night"—these are considered separate from the "Original" Cyber People canon produced at Memory Records.
